Dialects and accents
English is the most widely-spoken language of the UK, but you’ll also come across Scots and Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and Irish Gaelic. It also has a vast range of dialects and accents, which change as you move across the country. This is a reflection of its geography, inhabitants and invaders: the languages of the Anglo-Saxons, Romans, Vikings and the Norse have all been weaved into the original Celtic over time.
